I believe that I was part of the second American group /class of 1997, and because of her work, my future was set in a very different direction! I am forever grateful.

What a pleasant surprise to see the familiar faces of the teachers that have done so much for us. Haven't seen them for ten years. I frequently remember the experience of being a student. My memories are of excellent role models and the environment that allowed us to blossom in life and our professions. What an amazing group of people! They have touched our lives and changed us forever. Many thanks and thanks for posting the picture. Great to see the faces of the former peers.

Анастасия Гранина, первый выпуск англоязычной магистерской программы «Лингвистическое сопровождение экспортной деятельности», выпуск 2023 г.: “ Having an opportunity to be a part of the program and being able to get education as a student of an innovative Master’s degree program was truly a great experience! It’s not only the combination of courses that make it so unique and special, but also teaching stuff, fascinating projects and lovely groupmates.

The program is structured in a way that allows students to acquire knowledge in the fields of linguistics, international business, cross-cultural communication and economics. So that at the end every student becomes a comprehensively developed specialist that possesses skills and expertise necessary to meet the needs of the modern labor market.

Other advantages of the program is that it’s based on up-to-date learning materials, during classes various digital platforms are used (Perusall, Bandicam, Flipgrid and others),  all courses are well structured and include lots of speaking practice.

From my personal point of view, the following courses were especially useful:

  • Translation in economic discourse
  • Strategies for professional development in the VUCA-World
  • English for professional purposes
  • Intercultural relations of Russia and Europe
  • Language and culture
  • Academic English

The ability to study a second foreign language (German) for the last 2 years was also a pleasure as it has given us an opportunity to broaden our professional capabilities.

During our Master’s we’ve not only got professional knowledge, but also developed some crucial skills that are important for a successful specialist. For example, a lot of effort was put into developing our presentation, analytical, communication, business (negotiating, socializing, event management) skills.

It’s also important to mention that on our way to get a Master's degree we certainly faced some challenges, which is an integral part of every education process. To my mind, the biggest challenge for all of us was writing research papers fully in English as it requires certain efforts connected with language. However, in the end this challenge turned out to be a great opportunity to enhance our writing skills, enrich vocabulary and develop an ability to obtain information in the foreign language. Apart from this, the amount of projects and homework was also a challenge to some extent for some of us because we had to learn how to allocate our resources and time properly, but it allowed us to develop time management skills”.

Софья Семко, первый выпуск англоязычной магистерской программы «Лингвистическое сопровождение экспортной деятельности», выпуск 2023 г.: “During 2022-2023, I was fortunate enough to study in a Master's Program “Linguistic Support of Export Activities (in English)”.  This program is quite new, as it was created in 2019 in connection with the work on the national project "International Cooperation and Export".  I believe, that graduating with a bachelor’s degree is a milestone that many believe officially makes you ready to take on the career world. But what if this is just the beginning of your journey, and there are many interesting and promising paths that you can take?  So I decided that just knowledge in the field of linguistics and teaching foreign languages is not enough for me and that this master’s program will provide me with the hands-on learning experience and the opportunity to enter the job market with full confidence and a competitive edge.

I have several reasons why I chose this direction. Firstly, despite the various changes taking place in our world, professional education and qualifications of an expert consultant in intercultural communication in the field of export activities have become quite relevant. Especially considering the fact that the program includes knowledge of two languages, not only English as the global language of business international communication. Secondly, earning your master’s gives you a more in-depth understanding of your specialty and career focus. It suggests expertise and credibility in a particular field and allows you more freedom within that field. This specific knowledge increases your proficiency in a particular discipline, which gives you an advantage at a time when many employers are raising their educational requirements for emerging positions. Thirdly, I’ve got the opportunity to apply theory to practice while simultaneously getting my education through internships and different projects occurring throughout my studies. One cannot ignore the possibility of being a lifelong learner. Choosing to further your education and pursue a master’s degree allows you to make more valuable connections, pursue necessary professional skills and foster personal development. After you’ve gained a sense of how you best learn and developed a love for it as a bachelor student, you now have the opportunity to further your development with the scientific and technological innovations that affect us every day.

Now I want to talk about the program itself in more detail. The first thing to consider is the key disciplines. All of them are directly related to this area of study and provide both theoretical and practical skills. One cannot but rejoice at the opportunity not only to concentrate on linguistics but also to study economic discourse, translation of business documentation and much that will be directly useful in further career. The same applies to the second foreign language - in our case, German, in which more emphasis is placed on the correct writing and filling out of documentation, the conclusion of contracts, the possibility of cooperation with various companies and the fulfillment of orders of a certain request. If we take into account other aspects regarding the practical application of knowledge, then business negotiation was very useful in this course. Communication is generally important in everyone's life but business communication is different and has its own peculiarities and subtleties that should be studied in order not to get into a difficult situation.

Summing up, I would like to say that for me this program is, first of all, a sense of personal accomplishment. Although your individual identity consists of far more than your education level or career, a master’s degree is certainly an achievement of which you should be proud of. When you earn a graduate degree, you have also earned additional value and credibility that invites a high level of respect. Receiving your master’s will not only give you a greater sense of confidence in your academic prowess but also in your ability to complete what you’ve started and to move into positions of leadership. Without the slightest doubt, I would recommend this program to all those who want to take the first step towards the world of business and trade, not only within our country but also abroad. I am happy that there are so many vacancies in this field to choose from”.

Михаил Парфенов, первый выпуск англоязычной магистерской программы «Лингвистическое сопровождение экспортной деятельности», выпуск 2023 г.: “ As a graduate student of the course "Linguistic Support for Export Activities," I have gained a valuable understanding of the critical role that language plays in international trade. The course has provided me with a solid foundation in the linguistic principles and practices necessary for successful communication in export activities. Especially among representatives from different cultures.

One of the most significant takeaways from the course has been the recognition of the importance of language and business etiquette in cross-cultural communication. Through the course, I have learned that language is not just a tool for conveying information but also a medium through which cultural values, attitudes, and beliefs are expressed. I now understand that effective communication requires not only a command of the target language but also an appreciation of cultural differences.

Moreover, the curriculum has exposed me to various strategies for overcoming linguistic barriers in international trade. For example, with the understanding of cultural dimensions it has become a lot easier for me to analyze the behavior of certain representatives of different cultures.

I have also learned the importance of translation and interpretation services, and how they can be utilized to facilitate communication between parties speaking different languages.

Another significant aspect of the course is the emphasis on the practical application of linguistic principles in export activities. The curriculum has provided me with real-world examples of how linguistic support can be provided to companies engaged in export activities, such as translation and localization of marketing materials and negotiations. Moreover, the course allowed me to gain actual experience in negotiations as a had a chance to work as a translator on business meetings between non-native English speakers, giving me a real opportunity to gain professional skills and develop as a professional in the field of export activities.

Overall, the curriculum on "Linguistic Support for Export Activities" has been an enlightening experience. It has provided me with a deep understanding of the critical role of language in international trade and has equipped me with practical skills and knowledge necessary for success in export activities. I am confident that the knowledge I have gained from this curriculum will be instrumental in my future endeavors in the field of international business”.

Елизавета Гранина, первый выпуск англоязычной магистерской программы «Лингвистическое сопровождение экспортной деятельности», выпуск 2023 г.: “ During the last two years we have been the students of the “Linguistic Support of Export Activities” program. We have had a truly fascinating, useful and informative experience, which we will be able to apply in our workplaces in the future.

There are several points that I would like to highlight. First of all, it is worth mentioning that the curriculum contains interdisciplinary modules (Economics and Linguistics). We studied such disciplines as Introduction to Economic Theory and Policy, Global Economy and International Economic Relations, International Trade, International Marketing, Economic Terminology (Theory and Practice),Communicative Strategies and Tactics in the Discourse of Negotiation, English in Professional Communication, German in Professional Communication, and many more.  It is definitely an advantage for every graduate student as such a curriculum allows one to be a professional in two fields at once! All the courses are up-to-date and involve the usage of modern technologies. During our Corpus Linguistics course we, for instance, studied how modern tools are used to compile a corpus.

Secondly, another advantage is that all these disciplines were in English. It enabled us to improve our language skills and to acquire professional vocabulary in the field of export, economics and business. Such experts are, definitely, in demand on the labor market as nowadays English is the language of international business relations and no company can do without a person who speaks English fluently and has knowledge in a particular field. Having classes in English made it possible for us to have disciplines with foreign professors, who not only provided us with theoretical knowledge but also shared practical experience with us.

Thirdly, as our program is fully delivered in English, it is only logical that at the end we are to submit our master theses in English too. It is great that we had such an experience, as writing the final research paper in non-native language is like a new world. There are other rules, wording, etc., which are completely different from the format in Russian. During these two years, we have been thoroughly taught how to professionally describe the results of your research in English. It is a great experience, which can be your competitive advantage among other graduate students.

In addition, I would like to say a couple of words about the internship. At the beginning of our second year, we had a six-week internship in places connected with our major. I had internship at the Department of International Relations of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. I learned how the Department operates in general, how the most essential tasks are carried out, what relations Nizhny Novgorod region has with other regions of foreign countries. It was a very useful experience, which I can further use in practice.

Last but not least, no modern University program can do without a course in a second language. Our group studied German. During these classes some of us have learnt, some of us have improved grammar, speaking and vocabulary skills in German. Apart from it, we had an additional course on business communication in German. We have learnt how to write enquiries, offers and other business documents in German. Although I have been studying German for 4 years already, I have never seen something similar, that is why it is definitely an advantage of this program. The elective in a third language is also available.

To conclude, I would like to highlight that during these two years we have acquired knowledge concerning business culture of different countries, linguistics, economics, marketing, international advertising, exporting a product, business vocabulary, theory of intercultural business communication, translation skills, and many more. I will be able to apply all knowledge and skills in the future and I am sure that with the help of this program I will find a good and well-paid job.
